How to get promoted on the job

I work with lots of people who ask me all of the time “How do I get promoted”.

Here is a solid game plan to get promoted or to make more money in your position.  I have seen this work many, many, many times over and over in my career as well as many others.

Get to work one hour earlier.  What is the old saying?  The early bird gets the worm.  Yes this is true.  When you get to work earlier than everyone else something  magic happens.  You don’t have any distractions and research shows that you can do three hours worth of work in one hour when you don’t have any distractions.

Work through your lunch hour.  I am not saying don’t eat.  But don’t leave the office.  Again, when everyone is leaving for the hour, you can stay back and get things done by maximizing your un-interrupted time.

Stay one hour later.  Yep.  Why not, the traffic is bad anyway.  By staying one hour later you again get the uninterrupted time.

Lastly, my advice as a manager for many years.  Don’t tell your boss, colleagues, etc. how much you work if you implement the above schedule.  They will see you, you don’t have to tell them.  They know.  And your results will show as well.

What if there are no opportunities to get promoted?  Do you want to earn more money?  The above is a sure-fire way to earn more money as well.  The more value you bring to the marketplace the more money someone is willing to pay for your services.  You get paid for the value you bring to the hour.  The more value you bring to one hour of work, the more someone will pay you for that hour.

Personal note here:  I know how much I make an hour and you do as well.  My goal and a solid goal for you should be to multiply that rate by 10 times your current hourly rate.  What if we did that?  What would that do for us?  That is my goal.  Those who say it can’t be done are the ones watching the ones doing it.  Lets go out and do it.  I know we can.

To your success and your future.

500 years later…

In 1501 Michelangelo was commissioned to start work on the statue that ultimately became the statue of David they we all know.  It took Michelangelo two years two find the marble stone.  After finding the stone he then sculpted, carved, and sanded into the magnificent statue.

How long did it take to complete the statue?  It took him more than two years, almost three years to create a masterpiece that has now lasted over 500 years.

What is your masterpiece?  How much time are you committing to it?  Michelangelo devoted all of his time that he had over a three-year period to create something that has now lasted over 500 years.  This just blows my mind.

What will be my masterpiece?  What will be yours?  What will people be saying about you or me 500 years from now…  Michelangelo set some high expectations for all of us with his masterpiece, but we each have an opportunity to create our own masterpiece today and everyday.

To your success and your future.

“If Only”

These are the two most commonly used words within a psychiatrists office says one psychiatrist with over 25 years of experience.

What does “If Only” mean?  Well it means a person is living in the past.  Looking back over their past failures, misdeeds, issues, etc. as the reason they are where they are.  As Einstein said, you cannot fix the problems with the same thinking that got you into those problems.  So we must change our thinking about the past, present, and future to change our problems and situation.   You can’t see the future looking in the rear view mirror.  Take a look at this post.

Are you an “If Only” person?  Do you ever use these two words?  If so, it is your lucky day!  You have the opportunity to start today and say I am glad I did.  I am glad I did start that diet.  I am glad I did work the extra hours at the office to get closer to my goal.  I am glad I did take advantage of that unique opportunity.  I am glad I did spend some more time with my family.  I am glad I did attend church.

Be an I am glad I did person today and let me know how it worked out for you.

To your success and your future.

The meter is still running

I am sure most of us have been in a taxi cab before.  If you are like me there have been times when you have been sitting in traffic just watching the meter just keep running.  You are in the back seat just watching the dollars add up.  I really hate that.  It just seems like a total waste of money and there is nothing you can do about it.

Don’t you wish the cab driver would turn the meter off when you are sitting in traffic not moving?  That would be awesome.  But that would never happen.  Our lives are just like the cab sitting in traffic, whether or not we are moving towards our destination which are our goals, ambitions, or purpose the meter/time is still running.  If we are not moving towards these things, just like the taxi cab driver doesn’t care, time doesn’t care what we do with it either, it just keeps moving also.

So today, I am choosing to not let the meter keep running while I sit in traffic, I am going to get out of the cab, tell the driver to take an alternate route, or never get in the cab to begin with.  I am not going to let another day go by that I am not working towards my purpose and I suggest you do the same.

Labor Day

Labor Day in the United States is a holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It is a celebration of the American labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country–Wikipedia.

In honor of Labor day, I am planning on doing some work today.  The only difference is I don’t call what I love to do work.  It is actually fun to me.  Confucius said it like this “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”  Today, I am doing what I love.  Enjoy your Labor day.
